  1. My first thought was some sort of congenital myotonia (cf “fainting goat”), but a little searching reveals that Jumping Frenchmen of Maine is a distinct diagnosis, and may be psychological rather than neurological or muscular.

    • The thing that I find wonderful is that this syndrome developed among lumberjacks, which strikes me as a dangerous enough gig already.

  2. Fer fuck’s sakes , where the hell was this during the many dark years of debate about Quebec’s status as a “distinct society”?
Also , I wonder if there are any hockey teams named for this phenomenon.

    • They seem to get even more distinct when they scootch over the border to Maine.
