“German” here is short for “German cotillion,” which is where smart young people did a fancy couples dance called “the german.”
It’s easy to laugh at these uptight chaperones, but if society doesn’t hold the line on this stuff, we’ll eventually see young dandies walking around with their pants around their thighs and 8 inches of boxer exposed.
