csm 11 25 20The Christian Science Monitor, October 25, 1920. Mince pie becomes a metaphor for cultural modernism. An extremely extended metaphor, I might add (I’ve actually edited this sucker down to about a third of its original length). What’s crucial to realize here is that we’re talking about mass-produced mince pies here and not the home-made item. The points about the “uncertain constituency” and possibly recycled nature of mince is key, for mass produced mince, as we shall see, is the original and most mysterious of all mystery meats.
